Startup predicted to become Aarhus’ next Unicorn

Aarhus-based startup, Kanpla, are harvesting awards, nominations, and investments in just their second year in business. With a new backing of 3.3 million DKK in their pre-seed investment round and a foreseen Unicorn status from the leading startup accelerator and pre-seed investor in the Nordics, Kanpla has set their ambitions high.

Founded by the three young and ambitious entrepreneurs, Peter Bæch, Jonas Gøttler, and Robert Wolf, Kanpla is a SaaS-company digitalizing and automatizing workflows in canteens. “We wanted to rethink the whole canteen experience,” says Co-founder and CEO, Peter Bæch.

It all started with an idea. “When the clock struck 3 pm, we walked past our school’s canteen and saw how much food they were throwing out (…) earlier that day, we were standing in a long line to get food in the same canteen”, reminisces Peter Baech.

These two inefficiencies were the seeds that started a brainstorm on how they could make canteens smarter from A to Z.

Awards and nominations

The solution is a digital platform and app combining pre-ordering of canteen food and quicker payments from the customer’s own phone. After a short period of time, the company began getting recognition from some of the largest startup awards.

Kanpla’s nominations count EY Entrepreneur of The Year only six months after launching the company and the Sustainable Tech Startup of The Year by SDG Tech Awards – the Nordics’ largest sustainability award.

“It’s great that we are noticed and that we get recognition for making a difference on the sustainability agenda, which is one of the reasons why we started Kanpla in the first place,” says Peter Bæch.

Recently, the leading startup accelerator and pre-seed investor in the Nordics, Accelerace, predicted Kanpla as the next Unicorn upon finishing their Beyond Beta accelerator program.

“Kanpla has in a very short time managed not only to build a product with excellent reception in the market but also been able to attract customers extremely fast. They have turned that initial product idea into a fast-growing company with great traction,” explains Investment Manager at Accelerace, Michael Rohde Böwadt and continues;

“Their ability as a team to overcome challenges during the pandemic and turn their original insight into the right product has stood out from the crowd.”

Looking for a seed investment in 2022

“Our ambitions are high. From the beginning, the goal has been to become market leaders in Europe and the US and to create a Unicorn business down the road,” explains Peter Bæch.

The company has had a great take-off, recently welcoming five, strong angel investors in their pre-seed investment round, taking in 3.3 million DKK. Now, they are looking towards VC’s for their seed investment round in Q4 2022.

“We chose to start our journey together with carefully chosen angel-investors who could provide network, competencies and strategic sparring. Our plan is to go for a VC-investment in the next round” announces Peter Bæch.

Aarhus-born and Aarhus-shaped

Kanpla is born in Aarhus and is continuing to build their business from their office in INCUBA Navitas. Peter Bæch recognizes that the ecosystem in Aarhus are helping their business take off.

“There are tons of great initiatives in Aarhus. The ecosystem is awesome to be a part of and it has given us the opportunity to get incredibly good feedback and sparring” ends Peter Bæch, after mentioning Væksfonden, Connect Denmark, Incuba, Erhvervshus Midtjylland, and The Kitchen as valuable partners and network providers for Kanpla.
